Back Carriers
Looking for a backpack carrier? We've helped lots of moms & dads to carry their kids on their back... here are our favorites.
We typically recommend carrying your baby on your front or hip until they are about 6 months old. This varies with the comfort level of the parent and the development of the baby. For back carrying less thn 6 months, we recommend personal instruction.
- The Ergo Baby Carrier our favorite for back carrying. The padded waist strap helps transfer some weight to the hips. The Ergo can also be used for front carrying, but this carrier is best as a back carrier. You will really notice the comfort when carrying a heavy child. I've carried my 40 pound 3 year old comfortably. My husband has carried our 5 year old. Best for babies 5-6 months and up. We do not recommend the Ergo for hip carrying.
- Mei Tai - Also a great 2 shouldered back carrier. Very small mammas may find this easier than a structured carrier. I prefer the mei tai if you are carrying your baby on the front more than 50% of the time. The versatility of crossing straps in the back makes it often more comfortable for front carrying. Some people don't like the long straps, others like the versatility of various tying methods. Best for babies 5-6 months and up (when babies are typically comfortable in a wide straddle positionn.
- Wrap The wrap is my all around favorite for newborns and for front carrying (but not necessarily for back carrying). Front carrying is easy, but back carrying is challenging. It took me 30 days of daily practice to get comfortable with back wrapping.
The wrap takes a bit more practice to learn to use properly on the back. However, once you get it tied, it is the very comfortable. (although the padded straps on our Mei Tais are a close second).
