Baby Sling

Definition of baby sling, types of baby slings

The term Baby Sling is usually used to describe a one-shouldered baby carrier where an infant can be carried in a reclining position.

Baby slings can also refer to a wide variety of soft carriers including wrap carriers, mei tais, and sometimes soft constructed carriers such as the Ergo Baby Carrier.

Hotslings and the Maya Wrap ring sling are clearly considered baby slings.

Baby Slings with rings represent a modern spin on the traditional Rebozo that has been used in Mexico (and other countries) for many generations. The Rebozo is used to carry every day items as well as babies. Indigenous women have passed the art of using the rebozo down from woman to woman. Young girls are often seen carrying their younger siblings in the rebozo baby sling.

Using the rebozo, wraparound carrier, or any sling carrier is quite simple once you learn how to use it. Help from another experienced mother is invaluable, but many of us have learned from instruction booklets, video, and various internet resources.

Wrap around carriers are extra-long rebozos (up to 6 yards) that can be wrapped multiple times to provide better support for the baby and for the wearer. Mei Tai carriers are based on an ancient Asian design. The Ergo Baby is a very modern adaptation of the mei tai with buckles instead of ties.
